Dante is our newest family memfur. Isn’t he catsome?
After Meowmy took Tasha in, she said no more furkids. No way. Here is how Dante convinced her otherwise.
My human furmily was at the beach one day in November 2001. They were getting dressed and getting ready to leave, when they heard some very loud meowing. A pretty little kitty appeared and my daddy started petting it. My Meowmy on the other hand, refused to look. See, it isn’t that she doesn’t like cats, she loves us. That’s actually why she doesn’t look, she has a full house and can’t take anymore. So many people in our area do not spay and neuter, they let their cats have kittens and give them away free, many of which are dumped off later. Or they just dump the kittens themselves. There is no shortage of strays in our area. So she tries not to look at them, we are out of room and if she looks she might be tempted to take home.
So, with great effort, Meowmy ignored the kitty and continued to dry off and get dressed. She got in the car and before she could close the door, Dante suddenly ran over and jumped in her side! Meowmy could not believe it, she had never heard of a cat jumping in someone’s car before. She thought he must have wanted someone to love him pretty bad to do that. Meowmy looked in his pretty blue eyes, fought back her tears, told him she was sorry and put him out of the car. She shut the door and they started to drive off. Meowmy looked back, and saw that he was running after the car! She turned around and tried not to think about it. Then she started thinking, what if the kitty keeps running to catch up with us and runs out in to the road? And it must want someone to take care of it pretty bad if it’s chasing a car. It wasn’t long before she was in tears and my human sisfur Marian was crying too. She told my Daddy to turn the car around and go back.
When they went back, he was sitting in the driveway staring at the road. Meowmy got out of the car and he seemed quite happy to see her. She picked him and put him in the car with her while my Daddy went to talk to the caretaker of the park in front of the beach to make sure it wasn’t someone’s kitty. He left our phone number with him in case anyone came looking for the kitty.
They brought him home and cleaned him up. They immediately put ads in the newspaper saying a kitty had been found. Meowmy called every animal shelter and vet in the area where the kitty was found and no one was missing a kitty of his description. She faithfully checked the newspapers in the area and the surrounding areas for lost kitty ads and didn’t find any. She was surprised, she thought for sure someone had to be missing him, he was so friendly and seemed to love my human sisfurs, so she thought maybe it was a family with children.
Meowmy got started on finding him a home. She kept him isolated from us, and tried not to visit him more than necessary. She didn’t want to get too attached. But the more she was around him, the more she loved him. He seemed to want affection so badly, all he wanted was someone to love him. And she started thinking, what is one more cat? We could make room for just one more. How many times in one’s life does a cat jump in your car? This kitty was special, and deserved a good home. and if she kept him, she’d know he was in a good home!
So, the decision was made and he was officially a member of our family. Now, here is the funny part of the story.
All this time, Meowmy thought Dante was a girl. It was kind of difficult to tell for sure, because he had long hair and never sat still. Each time she looked, it seemed he was a girl. One day, he even went beserk when she was trying to look so, she thought he was a girl in heat!. The vet checked and said he was a girl. Meowmy made an appointment to have "her" spayed. They called right after he was shaved! He was a neutered boy. Meowmy decided to name him Dante because it sounded like a strong name to her an she figured he needed a nice masculine sounding name after everyone thinking he was girl for so long MOL.
He is adjusting to our family OK. A little nervous but he is adapting faster than Tasha did. He does not seem to like the larger dogs yet. At the rate he is adjusting though, I think he’ll be fine.
Lots of our friends have asked how I am reacting to him, knowing how I misbehaved when Tasha was brought in. I am not his best friend, and am a little hissy, but I am nowhere near as mean to him as I was to Tasha. Meowmy is keeping her fingers crossed that it stays that way.

This is Dante in the bathroom sink. He hid in the bathroom sink for the first two days he was downstairs. If the dogs came in, he would just duck lower until they couldn't see him

Dante hissing at the dogs in the bathroom. This was right after his first bath

Dante on the couch
There is a story about Dante on Furr Angels:

Update on Dante 5/26/02
He's adjusted very well. Tasha and Lestat are friends with him now. He tries so hard to make friends with me, but I am not willing. I am sad to say that he has FUS. He seems to have problems more frequently than Lestat and Meowmy wonders if that's why he was abandoned.

Dante got sick in december 2004. Its a long story, but meowmy changed vets because of it. Meowmy learned two things. Our new vet is cats only and really a kitty person. She tells us Dante is lynx point himalayan or something similar, meowmy doesn't remember because she could care less about cat breeds. but it is 90% persian and siamese, 10% tabby. We also learned that he did not handle the illness as well the others because his face is flatter and it makes it harder to breathe, especially when a kitty is sick.

Dante won at the North Pier the first week of October...yay!

He won Pet Level 1 the Second week!

He won Pet Level 2 the third Week!
