Lexi's Tshirts for Every Dog
Many counties and states in the US have laws restricting, sometimes even banning the ownership of certain breeds of dogs. The laws vary in severity from saying the dog must be muzzled while in public, to outright banning ownership of the breed. Some states and counties have forced to those that owned the dogs previous to the law being made to either pay a large fee to keep the dog, or give up the dog altogether.
Breed bans are an ineffective way to control dog attacks. Banning a dog because of it’s breed is like a banning a person because of their race. ANY breed of dog can attack. Dogs of ill temperament are usually victims of irresponsible owners. Poor socialization, poor training and abuse all contribute to bad temperament. Some dog owners also make dogs vicious intentionally for the purpose of fighting them or guarding their property. A dog of any breed can be made vicious. Some breeds may appear more vicious because they are the breeds chosen by these irresponsible individuals for their size, jaw strength, etc. If these breeds are banned, these individuals will find another breed to ruin and the responsible owners, those that truly love the breed, will be the ones to suffer.
The media also contributes to the negative image of some breeds. They tend to give more attention to dog attacks if one of the more “notorious” breeds are involved, such as a pit bull breed or Rottweiler. They rarely report stories when attacks by the more “harmless” breeds occur. They also do not mention that for the one Pit Bull that attacked, there are thousands of even tempered, obedient Pit Bulls that have never attacked anyone or anything.
What you can do to stop breed bans.
Contact lawmakers in areas where breed bans are proposed, and let them know you disagree with it.
Suggest that instead, they support laws that require proper socialization and training of ALL dogs, regardless of breed.
Contact the media when you see a story involving a dog attack where the breed is emphasized. Urge them to act responsibly and point out that any breed of dog can attack.
Finally, if you own a Pit Bull breed, Rottweiler or another breed with a bad reputation, please make sure your dog is properly trained and socialized. Keep him/her under control at all times. Set an example as to how well behaved the breed can be. Don’t let him/her become the bad example that shows up in the media for attacking someone.
Please do your part to help stop breed bans. Don’t think that it doesn’t affect you if the ban doesn’t involve your breed of dog. The next time it COULD be your dog.
